For Movie Or Data Projectors LCD Or DLP Is A Difficult Choice

Projectors LCD technology is one of the two major competing types of home and business projector which have been competing for the video and data presentation market for many years. An LCD projector means Liquid Crystal Display, and this type of projector has long been popular with the budget end of the market. The main competing technology is DLP, or Digital Light Processing technology. The DLP projectors have always appealed to people at the higher end of the market, who wanted a better picture quality and were prepared to spend more money to get it. Now, these technologies are converging, and the choice between the two is no longer as simple.

In the past, LCD projectors were used mainly be people at the lower end of the market, because of the “chicken wire” effect which blighted the resulting pictures. Now, that chicken wire effect has been greatly reduced by advantages in technology. Indeed, the latest 3LCD developments have very nearly eliminated it. On the other hand, the DLP projectors which were the choice of those with more money, have come down in price due to technological improvements. Now, you can realistically choose either type of projector for any application.

The DLP projectors which were always considered to best for home cinema remain a solid choice, and indeed have become even better. In the past, there was a trailing effect on bright colors known as the rainbow effect, but this has also virtually been eliminated by technological advances. With DLP projectors coming down in price, there are more people than ever who can afford to buy in to this technology. The modern 3LCD projectors are a genuine competitor, though, because there is such a vast improvement in picture quality now that the chicken wire problem has been all but solved.

An LCD projector has several slight advantages, as well as some minor disadvantages. LCD projectors do produce a sharper image, which is ideal for data presentation work but can actually be a disadvantage when you are trying to watch home movies. The softer picture produced by a DLP projector can seem more natural. LCD projectors are cheaper to run, as you can achieve the same level of brightness with a less powerful lamp.

For data projectors LCD has always been the obvious choice because of price and value. The chicken wire effect was never nearly so important as with home movies, because with data presentations you are not constantly staring at the screen. There are some disadvantages, though, such as the extra size and bulk of LCD projectors and the extra expense of replacement parts. LCD is becoming a viable alternative to DLP for home cinema, and DLP is now a serious contender for data use, alongside the traditional LCD projectors.
