When Choosing Projectors DLP And LCD Are Coming Closer Together

Projectors DLP technology is one of the competing systems for home cinema and presentation projectors. DLP means Digital Light Processing. The main competing technology to this is LCD, or Liquid Crystal Display, projectors. In the past, LCD was always the choice of those looking for a budget projector, as the machines could be produced far more cheaply than the DLP models. The pictures they produced did suffer from a “chicken wire” effect, which made them less attractive to the high end market. Buyers who could afford to spend a bit more money often went for a DLP model, which produced better pictures albeit at a higher price.

Now, we are seeing a great merging of these two competing technologies. The LCD projectors, which were previously seen as the poor man's models, have improved in quality. There is still a chicken wire effect, but it is far less noticeable than before. The DLP projectors, once seen as an option for the more well-to-do, have fallen in price so they are now able to compete with the LCD models across a wider range of the population. Either type of projector will be able to cope with both video and data applications without any trouble, and the choice is really one of minor details.

When you are looking for home cinema projectors DLP has traditionally been the best choice, and it may still have the edge. The one major picture problem with a DLP projector was always the rainbow effect, which led to striping from bright objects. The latest DLP chips have all but cured this problem. With the fall in price of DLP models, they are now the obvious choice for home cinema. The main competition is coming from the new 3LCD projectors, which have virtually eliminated the chicken wire effect. These new LCD models are definitely a viable alternative.

The LCD projector has often been the choice for data presentations, where there is less of a need to constantly stare at the screen as there is with home cinema. People were able to put up with the chicken wire effect because it did not stop a data presentation being seen and absorbed. If you have traditionally used LCD in this way, you will probably want to continue, as the new 3LCD technology will give you a better result than you will ever have had before.

There are other practical considerations which may affect your final choice. The image with modern LCD projectors is sharper, but this can actually mean that video seems more artificial. Of the different projectors DLP has a smoother blending of one color into the next. LCD projectors offer slightly more brightness and can therefore be cheaper to run. LCD projectors have expensive panels which can need replacing, so you can have fewer maintenance expenses with DLP projectors.
